Prandelli hints at a possible recall for Francesco Totti

By Ross Mackiewicz

Wednesday 29 September 2010

Italy coach Cesare Prandelli has hinted about the possibility of a recall for Roma captain Francesco Totti.

The 34-year old announced his retirement from the international scene following the 2006 FIFA World Cup triumph in Germany where he played an integral part in the Azzurri’s success.

However the following four years have been nothing short of despondent for the Italians after two very bleak tournaments - including a 4th place finish in their 2010 World Cup group.

‘Er Pupone’ has publically stated his availability for a return to the fold for the last two years after Italy crashed out of the 2008 European Championships on penalties to eventual winners Spain.

With Prandelli looking to implement his ideas, veteran Totti may very well have a part to play with the contribution of his technical prowess and personality.

As reported by One Calcio, Italy’s coach said. "We're looking for quality and Totti has proved over time to have technical quality and also great character."

The reintroduction of Antonio Cassano has delighted the Italian faithful who have been calling for his inclusion for some time. His relationship with Totti is unyielding and Prandelli is excited at the possibility of seeing them both feed off one another’s chemistry on the pitch - whilst setting an example to learning youngsters.

"The idea of seeing Totti and (Antonio) Cassano together in the national team is a particular desire, we're talking about friendship, a relationship that exists between them. We wanted to create an occasion which would be an example for kids who would want to watch the match. I said it would be great for two friends to rediscover each other on the pitch."
