Will Juventus Continue Their Pursuit of Sergi Roberto and Andres Gomes?

Tuesday 09 January 2018

The transfer window opened across Europe on January 1 with a number of clubs aiming to strengthen their squad ahead of a potentially gruelling second half of the season. Many of the top Serie A sides will be hoping to add significantly as they jostle for position at the top of the table as well as juggling Champions League and Coppa Italia commitments. Juventus have been in excellent form heading into 2018 but are eyeing up a number of January additions as they bid for their seventh straight Scudetto.

The Bianconeri have already added Liverpool's Emre Can to their squad but the German midfielder won't join up with his teammates until the summer. He arrives on a free transfer but the Old Lady are hoping to make some January additions to assist their quest for silverware across three different competitions. Juve's injury crisis at the end of December highlighted the need for savvy recruitment in 2018 with Massimiliano Allegri unable to call upon Gigi Buffon, Benedikt Howedes and Mattia De Sciglio for their crucial clash with Roma.

One man who has been continually linked with a move to Turin in recent months is Barcelona's Sergi Roberto. He is yet to extend his deal with the club and will be free to leave in 2019 if the Blaugrana decide against offering him fresh terms. Juventus are believed to be monitoring the situation closely. The midfielder turned right back was a graduate of the club's academy and his lack of first-team opportunities has led to interest across Europe with Premier League leaders Manchester City are also believed to be sniffing around the 25-year-old. The versatile performer has previously stated that he intends to remain at the Nou Camp, however he has become increasingly frustrated with lack of progress surrounding his contract.

Sergi Roberto has played 22 times in all competitions this season including making 13 appearances in La Liga where Barcelona are comfortably clear of the chasing pack. The 25-year-old featured in the club's thumping and decisive 3-0 success against title rivals Real Madrid on December 23, with their El Clasico success correctly predicted by Oddschecker who also advised backing Lionel Messi to continue his excellent goalscoring record in the fixture.

Andres Gomes is another player who has been linked with a move to the Juventus Stadium but Barcelona's $50m price tag has proved to be a stumbling block. Allegri is keen to add the Portuguese star to his side and the club are believed to have tabled a bid of $33m in August which was rejected by the La Liga leaders. The 24-year-old isn't short of admirers with Manchester United, Spurs and Chelsea all believed to be keeping tabs on the midfielder. He has struggled to make an impact in Catalonia having played just 245 minutes in the Spanish top flight and is reportedly unhappy with his bit-part role. He is likely to take less persuading to join the Italian giants and could offer increased competition in the central positions.

Juventus could realistically land Gomes as Barcelona are reportedly keen to offload the Portuguese midfielder and whilst landing the incredibly versatile Sergi Roberto would be a huge coup, he is likely to take significantly more persuading to swap Barcelona for Turin.
