Gattuso confident of Milan job as Conte linked with Man Utd

AC Milan head coach Gennaro Gattuso have once again claimed that he has the backing of the club’s management in his current position.

The former Milan midfielder did a good job last season following his appointment in the hot seat in November. Due to his immediate impact, Gattuso was handed a three-year contract in April.

The Rossoneri have big ambitions this season and that has been reflected in their summer business. As a result, there have been suggestions that an experienced name would be a better fit to lead instead of Gattuso. Former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte is one of the names that has been consistently linked with the Milan job, most recently on the betting with BetSid.

However, it appears that Conte won’t be arriving at Milan anytime in the near future. In a recent interview, Gattuso revealed that he was recently in talks with Gordon Singer, who is part of the current owners Elliott Management. The head coach added that Singer has assured him about his future and has asked him to ignore the media speculation regarding his post. However, he also admitted that his side must improve on last season’s sixth-place finish.

"When I met Gordon Singer he told me not to listen to what the press was writing about me in the past month and a half - that the club believed in me and to keep working hard," Gattuso said at his press conference on Friday.

"We discussed signing some new players, and we managed to do so, and to improve last campaign's sixth place. Improvement was the keyword."

Milan have been busy in the market, and Gattuso’s comments suggest that they might not be done yet. Regardless, Gattuso has a strong squad at his disposal, and Milan should be competing for Champions League places.

Meanwhile, Conte’s name has been linked with Premier League giants Manchester United. The Italian manager is available on the market following his departure from Chelsea in the summer.

According to Italian publication Calciomercato, Conte is among the frontrunners to replace Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford. Mourinho’s position at United has come under scrutiny following a tumultuous summer in which he constantly complained about the club’s lack of transfer activity. It has also been reported that Mourinho doesn’t have the backing of executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward anymore.

The recent reports linking Conte with United have also resulted in odds being heavily slashed on him being named the new United manager. Former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane is still the favourite to succeed the Portuguese manager at 2/1. Conte is not far behind the Frenchman at 5/1 odds.

Zidane would definitely be an exciting appointment for United fans following Mourinho’s brand of bland football. However, Conte has valuable experience of winning the Premier League. He managed one league title and one FA Cup in his two-year spell at the West London club.
