Napoli prepare for season defining fixtures

Napoli reached the 80 point mark at the weekend with a hugely impressive 5-0 win away to Torino. They have secured third place, but with two games to go in the Serie A, they trail leaders Juventus by five and they will have a top two finish in their sights.

It's been another good season for Napoli and despite sitting in third place, they have scored a massive ten goals more than leaders Juventus. Belgian striker Dries Mertens has been a revelation up front and with 25 goals for the season so far, he sits in joint second place in the scoring charts, just two fewer than Roma striker Edin Dzeko who is on 27 for the season. He is ably assisted with strike partner Lorenzo Insigne, who has bagged 16 goals this season, already bettering his total of 12 last season and with Marik Hamsik chipping in with 11 goals from midfield, there are goals all over this Napoli side. Using this Sportingbet promo, you can increase your earnings when you back Napoli to continue to score freely this weekend.

But they will not improve upon last year's second place finish, and they may well fail to catch Roma in the automatic Champions League positions. The final two weeks of Serie A will determine if this is a gallant attempt at pushing on for the title, foiled only by possibly Europe's strongest side - or a failed season where they drop below Roma and don't have the guarantee of Champions League to look forward to.

Since crashing out of the UCL 6-2 on aggregate to finalists Real Madrid, they switched their focus to their Serie A challenge and while they were never going to catch Juventus at the top from that point, they have certainly closed the gap on recent seasons. They finished nine points behind the champions last season and along with a resurgent Roma side, the gap at the top will be nowhere near that total this time around. Since that defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League, they have won eight and drawn one of their Serie A fixtures. In that run, they won away to Roma and thrashed a decent Lazio side 3-0. Has it all come too late?

Napoli line up against Fiorentina at home this coming weekend, knowing that six points is mandatory from their remaining fixtures, and that third place would signify an underwhelming season for Maurizio Sarri and the Partenopei faithful.

Hope is still there - two wins may well be enough to snatch second place and the automatic Champions League place that 2nd brings. But they need Roma to self-destruct and drop points, either against Chievo this weekend, or when meeting relegation strugglers Genoa on the final day.
