Siena mount incredible comeback against Juventus to gather a point in Turin

By Saurabh Sardeshpande

Monday 15 March 2010

JUVENTUS 3
Del Piero 3,7, Candreva 10

SIENA 3
Maccarone 16, Ghezzal 46, 74(P)

Juventus appeared to have put the game to rest by launching a blitzkrieg in first 10 minutes and scoring three goals against bottom-placed Siena. Having nothing to lose, the Robur mounted an incredible comeback led by Massimo Maccarone, and scored three of their own to nick a point from Stadio Olimpico di Torino. With Palermo losing to Udinese, the Bianconeri missed their chance to go fourth in the league table.

Antonio Candreva has been tagged by some sections of Juventus fans as ‘unnecessary’ and ‘overrated’. The youngster seems to be intent on proving his doubters wrong with pretty impressive displays in past few games. Yesterday, he was directly involved in first two goals and added his name on the score sheet with a thunderous shot from outside the penalty box. Not only does Candreva have a good passing ability but he can dribble the ball well. His contribution in the second half dwindled but the entire Juventus team was guilty of complacency. The Old Lady has an option to purchase him from Udinese for GBP 6.5m at the end of the season and will probably exercise it. Alessandro Del Piero continues to break records as he scored his 300th and 301st goals of his career. A section of Juventus supporters flashed their shirts with the respective numbers imprinted on them and the Captain seemed to enjoy that. Fabio Cannavaro is enjoying a decent run of form and had a good game yesterday. His form will be critical for Azzurri’s World Cup chances in summer.

Zdenek Grygera had a game to forget as it might have very well be his worst performance in Juventus shirt. Siena’s first goal came as a result of him giving away the ball directly to Maccarone. For the second goal, it was Maccarone again who effortlessly skipped past Grygera to produce a shot. In the second half, Alberto Zaccheroni made some reshuffling in defence introducing Hasan Salihamidzic at the right back position and shifting Grygera to centre back. This proved to be a costly mistake as the former Ajax man produced a clumsy challenge to bring down Maccarone in the box resulting in penalty which Abdelkader Ghezzal effortlessly dispatched.

It’s the beauty of Calcio that Siena, a team among the favorites to be relegated this season, causes problems for the heavyweights of Serie A from time to time. A couple of months back, they were on the verge of defeating Inter at San Siro. If it were not for two late goals from Inter, Jose Mourinho’s massive home-game unbeaten streak would have ended. Maccarone is widely regarded as the most underrated striker in Serie A. Constantly twisting and turning away from the defenders, he has already scored 11 goals this season with 3 direct assists to his name. Siena are now undefeated in their last five games. On paper, the easiest of the remaining games for Robur are all away against Lazio, Atalanta and Udinese, and they need to produce their best in these games for having a realistic chance of survival.
