Gennaro Gattuso faces his biggest test with AC Milan

Thursday 23 August 2018

AC Milan legend Gennaro Gatusso needs no introduction in footballing circles. The former central midfielder lifted every possible major trophy during his 13-year spell as a Milan player. He was also a part of 2006 World Cup winning Italy national side.

However, all those achievements mean nothing in his current job as the head coach of AC Milan. Gattuso was appointed at the helm of the Milan side following the sacking of Vincenzo Montella in November. He was able to steady the ship and led Rosonneri to the sixth-place finish in Serie A last season. Overall, it was a disappointing season for Milan considering the amount of investment they had made during the summer.

Milan have once again spent huge money on players in the ongoing summer window, and this time they are relying on Gatusso to guide the club in reclaiming their former glory - you can back them to succeed this year with a promo code at Sportingbet. These expectations are not unrealistic as Milan have accumulated a talented group of players in the last two summer windows.

Rossoneri spent upwards of 200m Euros on a number of players last summer. That spending spree has been followed by even more ambitious acquisitions in the ongoing window. The likes of Gonzalo Higuain, Ivan Strinic, Mattia Caldara, Diego Laxalt, Samu Castillejo and Pepe Reina have arrived at San Siro in what has been a busy summer.

Despite the recent upheaval and ownership changes, Milan’s ambitions for this season have remained same. The minimum requirement is a top-four finish, and Milan have a squad more than capable of challenging the likes of AS Roma, Inter Milan and Lazio this season. Failure to achieve this would be considered a failure for Gatusso.

Furthermore, Milan have been strongly linked with Antonio Conte in the media. The former Juventus and Chelsea boss is available, and he could be a decent option for Milan.

Thus, Gatusso has no scope of error in his job this season. It is possible that he might not even see out the entire season in his position if initial results don’t go according to the plan. Not only he has to achieve Champions League football this season, but also, he must prove that he is the best option to lead the club in the future.

AC Milan’s opening fixture against Genoa was postponed due to a bridge collapse. Now, they open their season with a trip to Napoli on Sunday. It is a perfect fixture for Gatusso and his boys to make an early impression. However, it feels like this fixture has come too soon for them.
