Andrea Poli could be the answer

By Andy Hunter

Wednesday 13 July 2011

At a time when many of the major club sides are struggling for creativity, Andrea Poli could prove to be the answer. The 21 year old was part of the Sampdoria side relegated from Serie A this season but could establish himself as the crucial cog for the next generation in Italy.

With the transfer window upon us, the constant links with players has become rather tedious but one catches the eye - a potential move by Inter Milan for the regista. Although now a Serie B side, Sampdoria have stated it will cost in the region of €10 million to secure his services. The young Italian playmaker only played 21 games last season, but he has already caught the eye and been identified as a possible replacement for Wesley Sneijder at the Nerazzurri if he were to leave.

The new Inter coach Gian Pero Gasperini is rumoured to be a keen admirer of the youngster from Treviso. However, the Sampdoria director of sport Pasquale Sensible has already told SportItalia: “Poli is worth €10 million. It would not be right to prevent him from moving back to Serie A, but the offer must be serious. He is a player with great prospects, but he is also available to remain with us and help get Sampdoria back to where we belong.”

Poli grew up in Treviso but moved to Sampdoria in 2007 when only 17 years old and played in the successful Primavera side that won the Campionato Primavera in 2007/8. The following season he was sent on loan to Serie B side Sassuola, where he gained valuable first team experience, and became a vital part of the side that finished fourth in the league in 2009 with Antonio Cassano and Giampaolo Pazzini.

There is a distinct lack of good young playmakers around in world football at the moment and he has even been mentioned as a possible Manchester United signing for the future. The game has become more based around physical attributes rather than subtlety - possibly Italy’s best example of the regista role in recent times has been Andrea Pirlo who may struggle in other leagues, England in particular. These players need time on the ball in order to dictate the play and set up attacking moves. Indeed, Pirlo did not really flourish until his move to AC Milan in his mid 20s which saw him develop into the player he is now.

It is a difficult time for Sampdoria but they cannot stand in the way of their talented young midfielder. At his age, he needs to be playing regular top level football if he is to improve his game and reach his potential. A move within Italy would certainly help but a move to another European side would see his game develop enormously. Andrea Poli is a talented youngster who requires a new stage to flourish - only time will tell.
