Inter stalwart Javier Zanetti believes the club are on the right track after a disappointing Serie A campaign last season, Gazzetta Dello Sport has reported.

The Nerazzurri dropped to ninth in the table under Andrea Stramaccioni but with Walter Mazzarri appointed from Napoli in his place, 39-year-old Zanetti believes things are looking up for the Beneamata.

We must start challenging again,” Zanetti said. “We have to bounce back this season and to do that we need a strong group of players,” the Argentine continued, adding that the new boss has made a good impression already.

He's an expert Coach with clear ideas,” Zanetti said. “To be a great team you need a charismatic tactician and Mazzarri is that.

We've also got more experienced heads and youngsters we have high hopes for - it's the right mix to help us come back stronger than before. We're here to help the younger players because they represent our future - that's why we're placing our faith in them.

The Serie A betting is less positive about Inter’s chances than Zanetti, with BetVictor putting the San Siro side at 16/1 to top the rankings come May.

Zanetti will miss the start of the season after surgery on his Achilles tendon, and suggested this coming year may be his last. He originally joined Inter in 1995 and has made almost 900 appearances for the club.
