Kaka and a Noble Proposition

Friday 11 October 2013

AC Milan and Brazil midfielder Kaka is still without wages after nobly volunteering to go unpaid, whilst recovering from an injury.

The 31 year old picked up a thigh injury in his first game for AC Milan after returning to the club in the summer transfer window. Kaka had spent four years at La Liga giants Real Madrid, leaving AC Milan for a world-record €65m fee in 2009.

The midfielder, who has been capped 87 times by Brazil, expressed his respect for the club by declaring that he would not be paid during his spell on the sidelines. The injury was sustained during the club's 2-2 draw with Torino, leading to the player being substituted just 70 minutes into his debut.

AC Milan have been on steady form since Kaka's absence from the starting XI, with a record of W2-D2-L2 in all competitions. A loss at home to Napoli and a draw at Bologna are the type of results that AC Milan will hope to overcome with the return of Kaka in the coming weeks. The Rossoneri currently sit in 12th place in Serie A, trailing behind the top three by 11 points, a finish that they have secured for the last five seasons.

If Kaka can fight against this set back and show a glimpse of the form that he had at AC Milan in his first spell at the club, securing a Champions League place for the club should become a cert, rather than just a possibility. However the bookmakers currently seem to be undecided on the fate of the Italian club, with odds between 2/1 and 6/1 available for a top three finish.

Italy's most successful club, Juventus, are favourites to finish atop of Serie A for the third year in a row. Napoli, Roma, Internazionale and Fiorentina are also preferred to AC Milan, who are priced at a massive 50/1. It is possible that a strong return for Kaka may see these odds shorten as AC Milan move up the table, however that will depend on the form of the unreliable yet talented goalscorer, Mario Balotelli. This month's international break will give AC Milan the chance to regroup and prepare for a trip to Serie A rivals Fiorentina and Champions league group opponents Real Madrid. It is believed that Kaka will be fit enough to feature in all or part of the game against his old club at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. The Brazilian may also be facing Real's world-record signing Gareth Bale, who is currently paying Kaka nearly €12,000 a month to rent his old mansion near Madrid.
