Milan move into forth - Matchday 36 - Sunday, 04 May 2008

An authoritative performance from AC Milan puts them into the lucrative 4th spot in Serie A on a day that was supposed to be remembered for Inter taking the title. Milan dominated the first half but couldnt make the break-through. The second half however saw two goals in quick succession for the Rossoneri. A run down the right wing by Kaka met by Pippo Inzaghi's head from close range opened the scoring, and the lead was doubled soon after when Kaka cut in from the left wing to capitalise on some lax defending from the Inter back four, and slide it past Julio Cesar. A Julio Cruz free-kick created a tense last half an hour, but Milan got the three points to go 4th. Fiorentina, their main rivals for the Champions league place lost to relegation stugglers Cagliari after a tired performance. Goals from Conti and Jeda cancelling out Mario Santana's for I Viola.

Inter could have won the Scudetto today had they matched Roma's score, but the Giallorossi won by a comfortable margin, 3-0 away to Sampdoria, goals from Panucci, Pizzaro and Cicinho keeping Roma in the title race theoretically, but Inter still look odds-on to claim the title, leading by 3 points, and with a better head-to-record.

A surpising result at the Stadio Artemio Franchi as Siena beat Juventus 1-0, making them mathematically safe from relegation. The only goal of the game coming from Houssine Khaja. Also in the relegation area, Reggina won a massive game away to strugglers Catania, 2-1, with a brace from Nicola Amoruso, Martinez with Catania's. That win pulls them out of the relegation zone, and one point ahead of Catania. Quagliarella was on target in a 1-0 win away to Empoli, who drop two places to 19th. Parma, who held that position today also got an excellent win courtesy of Cristiano Lucarelli at home to Genoa, but remain one point from safety and 17th place Catania. The contest may however be without Livorno, who look Serie B bound after losing 3-2 away to Atalanta, Doni and Ferreira Pinto putting them 2-0 down after twenty minutes, Rossini and Pavan taking them level, and then the winner coming in the 46th minute for Atalanta, from Padoin.

In other games Torino beat Napoli 2-1 at home Di Michele and a penalty from Rosina, Contini for Napoli, and Amauri added further to his summer transfer fee, scoring the equaliser and then winner away to Lazio, after a Goran Pandev penalty had put Palermo behind.
